In 1942, around 40,000 Jews from our home city and its surrounds were transported from this site to the gas chambers of Treblinka. At this ceremony, a magnificant monument was unveiled – the monument being the creation of landsmann and sculptor, Samuel Willenberg z”l.

During the monument dedication, former Chief Rabbi of Israel, Rabbi Meir Lau, a former inmate of HASAG-Pelcery, gave this address.

The Jewish Cemetery Today

The Częstochowa Jewish Cemetery dates back to the late 18th Century. It is the third largest Jewish cemetery in Poland, containing around 4,500 graves in about 8.5 hectares. The last burial here took place in 1973.
